Research opportunities: SQML is seeking highly motivated candidates (postgraduate or Ph.D. student, research assistant, and postdoc) who have a solid background in EE, MSE, Physics, or other related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant research experience on device physics, quantum transport, magnetism, microwave engineering and AI hardware (ACCESS projects). Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS): The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$309,600 (approximately US$39,700) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$12,900 (approximately US$1,700) per year for each awardee. RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme (PDFS): For each PdF awardee, the supporting university will receive an annual stipend of $396,600 (approximately US$50,600) per year, for the awardee’s basic salary as well as a conference and research-related travel allowance (of $12,600 per year inclusively) throughout the 36-month fellowship period. Jockey Club Global STEM Post-doctoral Fellowship (JC Scheme): To attract non-local# post-doctoral STEM talent to Hong Kong and nurture their aspiration to translate scientific research into industry application. (# Eligible nominees have to be non-Hong Kong Permanent Residents who have the legal right to work and reside in Hong Kong during the Fellowship period, OR Hong Kong permanent residents who are currently residing outside Hong Kong with full-time employment or full-time study in an award-bearing programme (normally at post-graduate level).)

Duration: 36-month full-time post-doctoral fellowship 
+ 12-month translational research industry attachment* (*The industry attachment aims to help Fellows acquire hands-on experience in the process of commercialization of new technology/ translational discoveries, while expending their network with the industries and research users for future technology translation.)
Maximum Funding Coverage (HK$): a)    $530,000 (annual stipend for three years) + additional 15% gratuity
b)    $15,000 p.a. for three years (conference and overseas lab attachment allowance)
c)    $15,600 p.a. for three years (academic development allowance)
d)    $300,000 (research project seed funding)
e)    translational research industry attachment subsidy in an eligible local organization – 50% of the salary will be contributed by HKJCCT (up to $30,000 per month)

Undergraduate research opportunities: HKUST encourages undergraduate (UG) students participating in the research activities through Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). You can find active UROP projects associated with SQML via UROP website. UG students at HKUST are welcome to apply these two projects. We also welcome visiting UG students to do research in SQML through Undergraduate Visiting Internship Students (Research Only) program.

  • Applicant should have a solid understanding of knowledge in two textbooks: <Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices> by Tak H. Ning and Yuan Taur and <Introduction To Solid State Physics> by Charles Kittel.
  • Applicant may want to focus on explaining questions and ideas instead of details of solutions.
  • Applicant should speak up and show enthusiasm.
  • Applicant should show a strong problem-solving capability.
